St. Albans admissions timeline for fall 2027 entry

Every published date for the St. Albans application: application January 5, supporting materials January 13, decisions February 26.

St. Albans School is an Episcopal school for boys in Washington, DC, serving grades 4 through 12. For fall 2027 entry, the grade 9 application is due January 5, 2027, and most of the supporting materials are due eight days later. This guide lists the dates in the order families meet them, with what the school asks for at each step.

Which grades take new students

St. Albans calls grades 4, 6, 7 and 9 its entry years. Grades 5, 8, 10 and 11 are non-entry years, and places there are limited. The school says grade 8 averages 0 to 2 openings a year and grades 10 and 11 average 0 to 3. This guide focuses on grade 9, the largest entry point for the Upper School.

Start with the visit

Grade 9 applicants spend a day at the school, and the school calls these shadow visits and interviews. The student gathers in the Common Room of the Lane-Johnston Building, then meets members of the Admissions Office, takes a campus tour, and attends classes and lunch with a current 9th-grade student ambassador. Visits run from 9:10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on select days from October through early February.

Families create an account in Ravenna, the school's application portal, to sign up. Scheduling opened on September 8, 2026, so book early if you have not. Optional tours for parents run on select Mondays and Fridays. The fall 2026 Open House was held on October 25, so check the school's admissions site for future dates.

What goes into the grade 9 file

  • The application. Apply through Ravenna. The fee is $80 for domestic applicants and $120 for international applicants, and families can contact the Admissions Office for a waiver code.
  • The questionnaire. The applicant types answers to seven separate questions. The school says no outside source should be used, so he should write it himself. The answers are due January 13, 2027.
  • Two teacher recommendations. Parents use Ravenna to request forms from the current math and English teachers. These are due January 13, 2027.
  • Transcripts. Parents submit a Transcript Request form covering the current year (first and second quarter) and the previous school year.
  • Test scores. The school requires an SSAT, ISEE or HSPT score, and any one of the three is acceptable.

Testing dates matter

St. Albans needs test scores in hand by January 13, 2027. The school's guidance is to register in the fall and test no later than early January so that scores arrive in time. Limited fee waivers are available for both the SSAT and the ISEE. The test provider will ask for the school code, which is 6256 for the SSAT and 090165 for the ISEE. Plan for a possible second sitting, and leave a few days between the test date and January 13.

Tuition and financial aid dates

The school lists tuition of $59,938 for day students in grades 4 through 12 and $84,497 for boarding students in grades 9 through 12. Check the school's admissions site for the year those figures apply to. St. Albans says admission is need-blind and that it meets full demonstrated need. For 2026-27 it reports more than $6.4 million in grants, with about 30 percent of students receiving aid.

Aid applications go through Clarity, which opens October 1, takes under 30 minutes, and carries a $60 fee. Applicant families file by January 20, 2027, while current families file by January 5. The school keeps aid information confidential and asks families to renew each year. Because aid awards are made alongside admission offers, the filing date matters as much as the application date.

What the school has not published

On the pages we reviewed, St. Albans does not publish an admit rate, the number of applicants and seats, or typical test scores. The seven questionnaire questions sit inside Ravenna, so they were not public. The pages also do not give the date the application opens or say how long the interview lasts. If one of these affects your plan, ask the Admissions Office at 202-537-6435.

What to do this week

Book the shadow visit if you have not yet, then work backward from January 5. Create the Ravenna account, request the two recommendations, order transcripts and pick a test date. Our timeline tracks the same dates, and the application steps and FAQ cover the rest. For help with your own son's situation, EduAvenues high school admissions is a good place to start.
